The mainstays to build next seasons side around?
Was mulling over next season, now we are safe, and concluded that we have 7 players you can pretty much hand your hat on starting next season, injuries aside of course, then build from there?

Fab
Diop
Og
Rice
Soucek
Bowen
Antonio

Would suggest we need two new fullbacks which would take it up to 9..

The other 2 spots can can from further new signings or from the likes of Diangana, Haller, Fornals, Noble, Lanzini, Yarmalenko, Wilshere, Anderson,Snodgrass, Balbuena, and maybe Cullen, or any youngsters coming through..

Thoughts?

Re: The mainstays to build next seasons side around?
Fabianski

Johnson Mings Ogbonna Robinson

Rice (C) Soucek

Bowen Benrahma Antonio

Haller

Subs:
Randolph, Fredericks, Balbuena, Noble, Fornals, Diangana, Watkins, (Masuaku, Wilshere : if they keep this 5 subs thing)

A team like that would have a feel of rejuvenation without revolution, with further added energy.

Maybe Ake or Mings for the CB slot?

Re: The mainstays to build next seasons side around?
Id actually keep Cresswell as experienced back up. He is a weak link but as a number two he'd be perfecfly acceptable, and is a well liked and valued member of the squad (plus we have to be realistic abput just how much business will be possible). I suspect 4 new first team squad members (with 4 or 5 of the squad leaving) is about as dramatic a change as we'll see.

On that basis my leavers list would be:

- Diop (35m)
- Lanzini (10m)
- Yarmolenko (7m)
- Anderson (25m)

I could also see Ajeti or Silva, Cullen, and maybe Holland leaving (but with none of these really first team squad contributing this isn't a big problem).

With agents fees and the like would give us a war chest of around 65 to 70m (i doubt there will be any available funds without departures).

From that we will need:

- 1st choice LB
- Number 10
- "Promising" Striker to at least threaten Haller and Antonio
- New starting CB

I'd have Diangana back to complement the wide forward slots and Hugill back as a 4th choice forward/cup forward.

Squad (order of preferred selection).

GK: Fabianski, Randolph, Martin
RB: Johnson, Fredericks
LB: New LB, Cresswell
CB: Ogbonna, New CB, Balbuena, (Rice), Cardoso
CM: Rice, Soucek, Noble, Wilshere, (Snodgrass), Coventry
AM: New AM, Fornals, Snodgrass (Bowen)
WF: Bowen, Diangana, Masuaku, Snodgrass (Antonio, Fornals)
ST: Antonio, Haller, new ST, Hugill

That to me feels a fairly achievable squad refresher, would make 3 changes to the starting line up (hopefully all sub 24 years of age) and address the areas of AM and LB (and arguably CB) which have continued to be problematic.

8 or 9 player swings, especially with the pace Moyes assesses players at, simply won't happen.

Say we managed to get:

Robinson from Wigan, Eze from QPR or Benrahma from Brentford, Watkins from Brentford, and an as yet unnamed CB, then we'll be in reasonable shape.

It’s ok Ronald us with less bony heads find hats made from tin foil quite uncomfortable so your one is safe

tnb - pretty much agree with that, but it's a hell of a big "For Sale" list. I'll be surprised if we manage to shift half of those, which of course buggers up our buying power.

Re: The mainstays to build next seasons side around?
Definitely Fabianksi but we need to start thinking about who is next. Either have a target in mind who can come straight in or bring a youngster in for one of Martin/ Randolph and probably play them in one or both cups. Do we think it's going to be Trott? Time to decide. I suspect not.

Johnson deserves a shot at right back but needs an experienced backup. We don't have a left back worthy of the title and so need two of those. At centre half we need to make our minds up on Diop and cash in if we're not sure (and I'm not). Ogbonna will be first choice for another season or two but, again, we need someone looking to push on. Balbuena is probably good enough as 3rd/ 4th choice for now. How serious are we about Cardoso? If he's not going to be 4th choice fighting for 3rd choice next season then someone else needs to come in. I know he's still very young but he was supposedly highly rated, and yet we've seen next to nothing of him.

Soucek is clearly the priority for the summer along with keeping Rice. Sign/ keep those and it's looking decent there. Noble as backup, plus one, is ok. Wilshere I suppose can hang around if no one wants to take him off our hands, and why would they.

Fornals divides opinion but I like him. Emergency cover in the deeper central midfield and wide positions, plus first choice 'number ten'. Sell Lanzini and bring in someone else to compete with PF there.

Snodgrass can go with a lot of goodwill as and when someone wants him, but until then he's useful and willing cover. He shouldn't be considered for starting though. On the wings, Diangana deserves a shot on the right and Antonio (if we sign a decent striker to compete with him there, giving us the option of putting him wide if needed) gives us two good players there.
It's probably time for Yarmolenko to leave, but thanks for the few (albeit very good) memories. On the left, Bowen is too good not to start but I wouldn't want to stunt Diangana's development by having someone who if he continues his current form is undroppable competing on the right. Anderson can fuck off, clearly. I'd like cover there but I suppose at a push you could say Fornals and Antonio could do a job in extremis.

Up front Haller will probably stay but I wouldn't build anything around him. We need a first choice striker to compete with Antonio and make us consider pushing him back onto the wing. Once again, decision time on Xande Silva - is he going to be in the debate, if not then time to move him on.

So to answer the question- Fabianski, Johnson, Ogbonna, Rice, Soucek, Bowen, Antonio, and maybe Fornals.

What we need - two left backs, an experienced right back, cover in central midfield and further forward, and a striker. Also possibly a young keeper, young centre half, and not a priority but also possibly a young striker and young left winger unless we have confidence in Academy prospects in those positions.

Sell Cresswell and Masuaku, Fredericks, Yarmolenko, Anderson, Lanzini, Ajeti, and if they are not considered good enough to compete for the first team also Trott, Cardoso, Holland, Silva, and Coventry. Also maybe Diop and one of Martin/ Randolph, and potentially Snodgrass and/or Wilshere. Obviously Hugill and Reid too (sad in one case, not in the other).

It could be a busy summer. It probably won't be though. That is a lot of business to do, even over two windows, but it is a legacy of the scattergun approach we have been taking for too long.

On the managerial side. Get rid of Moyes and do whatever it takes to get Pochettino here.

Re: The mainstays to build next seasons side around?
Yarma is too slow and too expensive for "impact sub"...sell.

Haller will score goals if the team plays well, and finding goal scoring strikers is hard (and we have bigger areas of concern)...keep.

Wilshere...no cunt is gonna take him...keep

Anderson...reckon we'll struggle to get 25m for him after the season he's just had...but I'd sell given the chance for that much or more.

Lanzini...not close to the player he was. Sad (as we're short a playmaker), but sell.

Diop...controversial, but think if we can entice a big bid (35m plus) then Id sell as for all his potential he has too many bad games...sell.

Re: The mainstays to build next seasons side around?
I would not sell Haller or Yarmalenko. They have both shown class occasionally. They are useful players. Haller seems like a confidence player - in a better team with a clear system we can see that he can play well and score goals. If we bought someone to play with him then it might be best to keep him. If we're going to play with one up top then maybe we sell him as he clearly is not comfortable on his own there.

Anderson, Lanzini would get fairly decent money in (albeit big loss on Anderson) and have offered nothing.

Re: The mainstays to build next seasons side around?
Everyone has a price tag. Everyone.

If people offer us enough money and Rice enough money then he'll leave. I doubt anyone will offer how much we'd want.

Rice? 😂 Yeah cos he'll want another relegation battling season won't he.

Re: The mainstays to build next seasons side around?
Dunk would be a great signing, but to play with Ogbonna not Diop. Never gonna happen though, would cost 40+ probably.

Re: The mainstays to build next seasons side around?
Bump this thread next year.

Rice is going to stay and prove the entire footballing world stereotype he is not in it just the money and biggest pay packet.

He will be Captain next season.

If at a big club you think he will be stopping in Pubs on his way back from a game and buying everyone a pint.

He loves the connection with West Hams supporters and without doubt at his age knows there are better owners to come.

40 million is nothing for his pedigree. Chelsea would not pay 80 Million.

He is staying. Would have fucked off years ago otherwise.

zico 8:50 Sat Jul 18
Re: The mainstays to build next seasons side around?
The one slight possibility that might help in keeping Rice is that he already plays for England and he is playing regularly here so he doesn't need to move to keep his England place. If Noble is going to a bit part player it might be an idea to hand over the Captaincy to Rice as well as that might be a sweetener. Having said that I wouldn't be surprised if he goes but 40million is peanuts.

Re: The mainstays to build next seasons side around?
A year ago we had Anderson, Lanzini, Haller, Yarmo and Wilshere, plus Pellegrini of course, and were expecting great things.

In the last two playing months the order has changed radically. I'm not sure what happens with the above mentioned players next, but a decent question would be 'what does Moyes do to fit them in to the side?"
